I am a CREATOR.....

My favourite piece from the Creators Project in association with Vice Magazine so far is the CSS piece. Read the interview here:

The Creators Project: How did you go about earning such International acclaim?

Ana: We were already distributing our CD through Trama here in Brazil. A lot of people were listening, thanks to the Internet, but then we transitioned to a outside of Brazil. We sent our demo to the US to see what would happen, and then it landed in Sub Pop’s hands. Sub Pop heard it and liked it. It was a big step. Lovefoxx: In December 2005 we had our first show outside the United States.

Ana: In NY. And things just started taking off at that point.

When did you guys start feeling like people were starting to recognize the band?

Carolina: In Japan…

Ana: People never recognize me. But in Japan, someone recognized me for the first time ever and I was by myself. I wasn’t even with the rest of the band. A girl started crying in a t-shirt store when she saw me.

Lovefoxx: Yeah, it really hit us when some guy in Japan came up with his Ipod, showing us that we were playing in the little screen.

Luiza: He was holding the Ipod to his heart! It was surreal.

What is your onstage setup consist of technologically?

Ana: I use a lot of gear. I always need to know what’s going on during the show, though.

Lovefoxx: You’re very responsible like that.

Ana: Adriano is very complex with his gear too. We are professional musicians, but we focus a lot on the live show as well. That’s very important—just as much as the technicalities of what is happening on stage.

Lovefoxx: Yeah, like when we play “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” we go crazy at the end and we all start screaming and jumping around the stage…

Ana: If you do something super complex onstage it’s very difficult. We love to interact with the audience. We wouldn’t be the same band that we are today if it weren’t for that. We have to stay focused on stage, but we need that interaction. All this technology and all of the gear we have is what allows us to have fun the way we do when we are performing

What’s it like when you guys go into the studio?

Ana: Well, for the first one we were just like, “Let’s make an album.”

Lovefoxx: We started the band in September 2003, and that same year in November we played our first show. We played like three songs but you know, it was fun. We were playing next to a radio station and there was this crazy radio interference that caught on to a Joan Jett song. We figured it was a good sign.

Ana: And then we met her last year! Anyway, Adriano and Caro lived together and we recorded the whole thing in their apartment. Adriano has produced both albumsm but when we recorded at Trama…

Carolina: That’s where we had our real recording experience with all the professional equipment. Our second album was recorded there, and it was a different method.

Ana: We didn’t have a professional obligation with the band. We had personal obligations. With the second album, we recorded that under a deadline: It was super organized, and Adriano produced it again. It was recorded at Trama here in Sao Paulo, but was mixed in LA. Our third CD was also different. We had been in a band for seven years, went through a lot of stuff. We took our first vacation last year. And this year we’ve taken an entire year off to dedicate to this fourth album. We can take our time, and now we’re writing lyrics and music. We’re not exactly sure about all the details with the recording process, but we needed this calm pace to do this type of thing. It’s important that we’ve been able to acquire this autonomy.

Are there any particular benefits that come from taking your time?

Ana: We get to work with more people for example.

Luiza: We always try to do different things.

How has the industry changed in the last 7 years, do you think?

Ana: There are always tools to change the industry and make things easier—like the Internet.

Carolina: I think music gets out there a lot easier now and it travels like that. In a short amount of time after we started the band, we were able to start traveling ourselves.

Lovefoxx: I always read blogs to see what bands are “happening” right now. I think this contributes a lot. And I think that as long as people know about the band and hear about it, we feel good about it.

Ana: It’s not so much about just record sales. It’s also about playing shows, playing festivals. Playing shows are important. We have a lot of shows and it’s always been that way. It’s amazing to me that bands that sell records in the thousands can sell out festivals and shows for thousands of people just as bands that sell millions of albums.
